Blood Components

The era of modern chemotherapy was made possible through provision of platelets that would participate in the circulation in patients taking cytoablative chemotherapy. Standard platelet units are stored at room temperature, which limits storage duration due to contamination concerns. Recently, cold-stored platelets have gained attention as potential treatment for trauma or actively bleeding patients. Vitalant Research Institute scientists are actively engaged in determining the characteristics of cold-stored vs. standard platelets in terms of function and immune modulating capability.
