Donate blood for Research

Products

Products for research use are provided from two sources:

  • Community Donation (Inventory products) - All Vitalant donors provide consent for donated blood products to be utilized for transfusion, further manufacturing, or research use (Vitalant broad consent)
  • Research Donation – Research donors are paid by the blood center and are collected under an IRB approved research protocol

All products drawn from research donors who are paid by Blood Center and under IRB protocol.

RE107 Research Whole Blood - Fresh 250-500 ml Research Fresh Whole Blood collected in pre-specified anticoagulant.
  • Units will be collected in CPD bags unless otherwise specified.
  • Vitalant provides CPD and ACD bags. Other bags as provided by client.
  • Units will be tested for infectious disease, but results may not be confirmed until after receipt of product.

RE115 Research Plateletpheresis in PAS 3.5x1011 - 6.5x1011 A research plateletpheresis collection in platelet additive solution (InterSol)
  • Drawn from research donors who are paid by Blood Center and under IRB protocol.
  • Units will be tested for infectious disease, but results may not be confirmed until after receipt of product.
  • Collected on Trima with ACD-A. See RE309 for apheresis on Amicus Fee.
RE316 High Yield Platelet Donor 6.5x1011 - 9.5x1011 Request for single unit ≥ 6.5x1011 platelets.
  • Drawn from research donors who are paid by Blood Center and under IRB protocol.
  • Performed with order of Research Apheresis, Platelets (RE 114 or RE115).
  • Collected on Trima with ACD-A. See RE309 for apheresis on Amicus Fee.
RE309 Apheresis on Amicus Fee N/A Additional cost for apheresis procedure conducted on the Amicus device.

  • Drawn from research donors who are paid by Blood Center and under IRB protocol.
  • Units will be tested for infectious disease, but results may not be confirmed until after receipt of product.
  • Typically collected on Optia in ACD-A.
  • Unless otherwise specified, 150mL will be collected
  • Concurrent plasma collection may be performed if requested (see RE111)
  • PBMC isolation upon request
RE111 Concurrent Plasma Unit with Leukopak 50-200 mL Concurrent plasma collected during a leukopheresis procedure.
  • Performed with order of Research Leukopak (RE 110).
  • Unless otherwise specified, 100mL will be collected
  Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) As requested PBMC isolation (Ficoll), subset isolation and cryopreservation from whole blood, leukapheresis collections and leukoreduction chambers. Additional testing is available upon request.
