Epidemiology

Epidemiology Core

The epidemiology core's mission is to advance research on blood donors within Vitalant and collaborate with external partners on multicenter studies involving both donors and recipients. We strive to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply by supporting research and operational initiatives requiring expertise in epidemiology, statistics, and machine learning across Vitalant Research Institute (VRI), Vitalant, Creative Testing Solutions, and other collaborators. We also serve as a data coordinating and analytical center on projects. We are actively involved in large donor cohort studies and projects that link together blood donor data, blood testing and component data, and electronic health record data for recipients of blood products.

Hasan

Hasan Sulaeman, MSc

Epdemiology Core Manager, Staff Scientist II, Data and Informatics

Hasan Sulaeman is an epidemiologist and data scientist whose research currently focuses on SARS-CoV-2 and the ecological impact of zoonotic pathogens. His work integrates epidemiological modeling with ecological analysis to better understand pathogen transmission dynamics across species. Hasan also specializes in data engineering, developing and managing data infrastructures for multicenter studies and implementing machine learning solutions to support infectious disease research.

Epidemiology Services

Epidemiology and Statistics Consultation Support

We provide consultation regarding study design, human subjects research requirements, questionnaire content, sample-size calculation, data collection and management, and statistical analysis techniques on an ongoing basis. Complete statistical analysis of projects as well as manuscript review and editing are also provided.

Survey Design and Implementation

The epidemiology core team can rapidly develop and deploy surveys on mass scale utilizing the Qualtrics platform. Expertise developed during the SARS-COV-2 pandemic allows our continued focus on quickly capturing data during emerging infectious disease outbreaks by collaborative development of survey tools and rapid implementation. Our team has expertise in survey distribution via the native Qualtrics environment and in combination with other management tools such as Eloqua.

Database Management and ETL Pipeline Support

We provide data collection and management, database and data linkage support, ETL pipeline management and statistical analysis to colleagues and collaborators for projects large and small. Data are securely maintained in encrypted, restricted access environments and managed by team members with more than 30 years of combined experience using SAS, Stata, SQL, R, Python, ArcGIS and other data visualization tools.

Data Coordinating Center (DCC) Support

We provide complete study management and logistical support, including design of study management systems (SMS), electronic data capture (EDC) systems, electronic case report forms (eCRF) and routine study monitoring for research projects of any size.

We provide complete study management and logistical support for research projects of any size.

Research Interest

Hasan Sulaeman’s research interests include the epidemiology of respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the ecology and transmission dynamics of zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases, and the impact of pathogens on biodiversity. He is particularly focused on integrating ecological and epidemiological approaches to understand disease spread across species and environments.
