Edward L. Murphy, M.D., MPH, is an internal medicine physician and epidemiologist with a research career focused on viral and clinical epidemiology. During his fellowship at the National Cancer Institute under Drs. William Blattner and Robert Gallo, he did field work on the epidemiology of HTLV-1 in Jamaica, West Indies and followed this with major discoveries about HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. After joining the faculty at University of California San Fransico in 1988, his research focus expanded to the epidemiology of other transfusion-transmitted viruses including HIV and hepatitis B and C viruses. More recently, he has developed a program in global transfusion safety including transfusion-related HIV research and training programs in Brazil and South Africa in conjunction with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute REDS program.
