Transfusion Safety Research

These studies are based upon large research databases including millions of blood donations which can be used for studies of viral prevalence and incidence, including HTLV-1, HTLV-2 and hepatitis C virus. As transfusion-transmitted infections have been controlled, other transfusion complications have been studied including: HLA antibody prevalence in blood donors and their relation to transfusion-related lung injury (TRALI) and iron balance and red cell production in donors. Dr. Murphy has focused recently on determining risk factors for transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO), a serious but under-recognized complication of blood transfusions (See Table 3 Murphy EL Am J Med 2013;126:357). A related area of research may be termed “blood donor epidemiology” in which blood donation behavior and frequency are studied using randomized trial designs and survival analysis. Finally, body mass index and anemia prevalence of blood donors are used to model the obesity and anemia in the US general population after adjusting for differences in demographic composition.
