The Institute is proud to produce some of the nation’s top transfusion medicine research by experts in such fields as transfusion-transmitted infections like HIV, HCV and HTLV; emerging infectious diseases like Chagas’ disease and West Nile virus; and preparing stem cells for therapy. VRI began in 1959 as the Scientific Services Department of the Irwin Memorial Blood Bank in San Francisco and is one of only four significant blood-bank sponsored research programs in the United Sates.
