Pulmonary Transfusion Reactions

Utilizing inflammatory cytokines in addition to a limited set of clinical predictors, we were able to effectively distinguish the etiology of transfusion-related pulmonary edema using regression models. We continue to study cardiopulmonary biomarkers as well as markers of endothelial injury diagnostically to better understand the pathophysiology of these adverse events. As part of this same work, we are examining the role of donor factors (age and gender) as well as modifications to blood components (washing and irradiation) in the development of adverse pulmonary reactions. While the focus of these studies is on adverse reactions, they also provide the opportunity to study clinical and laboratory markers of potential benefit in transfused patients with severe anemia or coagulopathy.
