Platelet and Red Blood Cell Biology and Physiology
 

The metabolic profiles of platelets (e.g., glycolysis rate) and RBC (e.g., lipid turnover) suggest there may be important targets that could be exploited to improve the storage characteristics and ultimately clinical efficacy of these products. Describing these profiles and relating them to in vivo outcomes remains an intense area of investigation and discovery. Modified methods of storage (e.g., anaerobic) or treatment (e.g., RBC rejuvenation) affect these profiles. Examination of these novel treatment methods will provide important clues to ultimate efficacy outcomes. We will continue to examine these associations in available databases, evaluate novel methods of collection/treatment, and relate these to in vivo outcomes. These efforts are in collaboration with several investigative partners.
