Blood Donations For Research

How else can I help if I’m deferred at the time of my donation?

Vitalant’s research program is another way to be part  of something bigger  than yourself. You may be eligible to participate in Vitalant’s research program if you are deferred from donating blood  to the community blood  supply for the following reasons:

  • received  a tattoo or piercing in a non-FDA approved location
  • traveled to a currently deferred area (includes travel  to areas with  high malaria risk, high Zika risk and military travel  to many European  countries  from 1980 through 1990)
  • engaged in male to male sexual contact in the last 12 months

What does it mean to be a research donor?

Donating blood for research is an important way you can continue to contribute during your deferral period. As a leader in the blood banking industry Vitalant works closely with several different companies and organizations on a wide range of research studies and provides support to area hospitals in need of blood and blood products for research purposes. Financial compensation may be provided for your time and travel.

How is my donation used?

Your donation will provide many benefits to the community by helping the medical community learn more about the most effective ways to collect, prepare and store blood donations. Collaborative research partnerships give Vitalant the opportunity to transform lives in a different way. We are proud to be part of scientific advancements in transfusion medicine and the biomedical field by offering our services and expertise in clinical trials, hospital-initiated studies and specialty contract research services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.
